In 2008, Peg Harvey was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She went through standard treatments that included surgery and 25 rounds of radiation. After these procedures, she asked her doctor what she should do next and he replied to keep on living her life as normal, following the same diet and lifestyle routines as before.
16 months later she found that her cancer had metastasized to her lungs, with multiple large tumors. Surgery was out of the question due to the size and extent of the tumors, and radiation would only destroy her lung capacity. Chemotherapy was also considered, but it would only extend her life by only 4 months and make her very ill. So she was given 9- 18 months to live.
Peg asked if there was anything else that she could do on her own. The first doctor said exercise might be helpful and the second doctor recommended that she live her life joyfully, but she should not to go to any clinics in Mexico for alternative treatments. Peg went home and crawled into bed and didn’t emerge for 6 days, allowing herself time to process her situation.
On the 6th day she emerged and went to church and asked her fellow parishioners to pray for her. Following church, Peg was hungry so they went to a nearby farmer’s market and happened upon a vendor selling powdered wheatgrass. Peg wasn’t interested in wheatgrass, but a book on the vendor’s table caught her eye, which was titled How I Conquered Cancer Naturally by Eydie Mae Hunsberger. As Peg was studying the book, the vendor looked directly at her and said “If I had a serious health condition I would get myself to the Optimum Health Institute over in San Diego.” Peg felt in her heart that this message was divine intervention.
One week later Peg was at the institute with her husband. She was part of a scholarship program in which participants received discounted rates while volunteering, this allowed her to stay for an extended period of time. OHI offers a workshop-style atmosphere which includes eating a 100% raw, vegan, locally and organically grown diet of vegetables, this diet does not include fruit or high sugar vegetables such as beets or carrots when a patient has cancer. Three days per week patients are on a 36 ounce juice fast to give the digestive system a rest and allow the body to replenish and heal. Water and rejuvelac which is a probiotic beverage made from fermented grains are the only other beverages that are offered. Detox therapies include warm water enema therapies, which are followed by a 4 oz wheatgrass implant (this is similar to an enema and is done to replenish the healthy bacteria in the colon that was washed away with the enema), chiropractic and lymphatic massage. This program also had therapies to build he mind/body connection which included positive self-talk, expressing gratitude, spirituality, prayer, and mediation.
After 7 weeks on the program, scans revealed that the largest tumor was gone and the second largest had reduced to 1/3 of its original size. 19 weeks later she had another scan and her terminal cancer was completely gone. Following the healing Peg now follows a similar diet but she may also include 20% cooked foods, but still no animal foods.
